More information, including witness testimony and a link to the live webcast, will be posted here as it becomes available.

Rural America Connectivity Remains Critical to Local Economies

Rural America's connectivity plays a vital role in connecting communities to the broader National Airspace System. For many regions, local airports support economic development, tourism, healthcare access, emergency services, business travel, and cargo transportation.

However, many smaller airports continue to face challenges related to airline service levels, workforce shortages, infrastructure funding, pilot availability, and changing travel demand. Policymakers have increasingly focused on these issues as airlines continue to adjust route networks and fleet strategies.

1. What is the National Airspace System?

The National Airspace System (NAS) is the network of airports, air traffic control facilities, navigation systems, aircraft, regulations, and personnel that support aviation operations throughout the United States.

2. Why are rural airports important?

Rural airports provide essential transportation access for passengers, businesses, healthcare providers, emergency responders, and cargo operators in communities that may have limited alternative transportation options.

3. What is the House Aviation Subcommittee?

The Aviation Subcommittee is part of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and has jurisdiction over civil aviation issues, including FAA oversight, airport infrastructure, airline policy, and aviation safety.

4. What is NASAO?

The National Association of State Aviation Officials represents state aviation agencies and advocates for policies that support aviation infrastructure, safety, and economic development.

5. What is the Regional Airlines Association?

The Regional Airlines Association (RAA) represents North American regional airlines that provide passenger and cargo service to hundreds of communities.

6. What role does the FAA play in rural aviation?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates aviation safety, manages air traffic control, and administers programs that support airport infrastructure and aviation operations.

7. What challenges are facing rural commercial air service?

Common challenges include pilot shortages, airline economics, infrastructure needs, workforce development, declining passenger demand in some markets, and maintaining service to smaller communities.

8. What is the Essential Air Service Program?

The Essential Air Service (EAS) Program provides federal support to help maintain commercial air service in eligible rural communities that might otherwise lose scheduled airline service.

9. How do rural airports contribute to economic development?

Airports support local businesses, attract investment, facilitate tourism, create jobs, and improve regional access to national and global markets.

10. What role could advanced air mobility play in rural transportation?

Future advanced air mobility aircraft may provide additional transportation options for rural communities by improving regional connectivity and access.

11. Why does Congress hold aviation hearings?

Congressional hearings allow lawmakers to gather information, hear stakeholder perspectives, evaluate policies, and consider potential legislative actions.

12. How can airport infrastructure investments benefit communities?

Infrastructure improvements can enhance safety, increase operational capacity, support economic growth, and improve transportation access for residents and businesses.
