In a remarkable update since HYSKY Society had the privilege of having Dr. Martine Rothblatt as our first podcast guest, she has been announced by Forbes as the latest biotech billionaire. As one of just 35 self-made women billionaires in the United States, Rothblatt's relentless pursuit of innovation, particularly in the fields of biotechnology and sustainable aviation, has propelled her to new heights. Her journey, marked by groundbreaking achievements, continues to inspire and revolutionize multiple industries (Forbes).

United Therapeutics: A Financial and Medical Triumph

United Therapeutics, under Rothblatt’s visionary leadership, has seen its stock surge by 50% in 2024 alone, boosting its market capitalization to $14.7 billion. This growth is largely attributed to the success of their flagship drug, Tyvaso, which has experienced a 41% year-over-year increase in revenue. Additionally, a $1 billion accelerated stock repurchase program announced in March has further solidified investor confidence in the company’s future (Global News).

Xenotransplantation and Medical Breakthroughs

United Therapeutics has made significant strides in xenotransplantation, achieving successful transplants of genetically modified pig hearts and kidneys into humans. This groundbreaking work, driven by subsidiary Revivicor, has the potential to address the critical shortage of donor organs and save countless lives. The company is investing $100 million into further research to advance this technology (Global News) (FuelCellsWorks).

Mikael Cardinal: Pioneering Organ Delivery Systems

Mikael Cardinal, VP of Program Management - Organ Delivery Systems at United Therapeutics, has played a crucial role in these advancements. Cardinal’s leadership in integrating eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) technology into the organ delivery process has been pivotal. He spearheaded the historic delivery of lungs via drone from Toronto Western Hospital to Toronto General Hospital, a first in medical history, significantly improving the efficiency and viability of organ transplants (FuelCellsWorks).

Cardinal's work includes developing a hydrogen-powered R44 helicopter, expected to achieve a range of over 175 nautical miles using liquid hydrogen as a fuel source. This innovation is part of a larger strategy to develop zero-emissions vertical-lift aircraft for organ transport, involving partnerships with eVTOL developers like EHang and Beta Technologies. His team is currently focused on integrating hydrogen fuel cells into the aircraft, with initial test flights planned for later this year (FuelCellsWorks).

Sustainable Aviation: A Vision for the Future

Rothblatt's commitment to sustainable aviation is further exemplified by the recent acquisition of the Sikorsky Heliplex by Piasecki Aircraft Corporation. Inspired by her challenge to create zero-emission eVTOL aircraft, the PA-890, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, represents a new era in aviation. Cardinal has been at the forefront of this initiative, working on integrating hydrogen fuel cells into eVTOL aircraft to create a sustainable and efficient organ delivery network (FuelCellsWorks).
