Boeing’s Aurora Flight Sciences Completes 7-Hour Hydrogen-Powered UAS Flight

Aurora Flight Sciences’ small UAS is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, extending flight times for long range reconnaissance.

Aurora Flight Sciences, a Boeing company, has successfully completed a seven-hour flight test of its hydrogen fuel cell-powered sUAS, SKIRON-XLE. Conducted in Virginia, this test marks a significant milestone in endurance capabilities for the Group 2 platform, designed for long-range reconnaissance missions.

Equipped with two five-liter hydrogen tanks, an Intelligent Energy fuel cell, and a Trillium HD45 EO/IR camera, the SKIRON-XLE demonstrated its extended operational capabilities with a takeoff weight of 54 pounds. Jason Grzywna, senior director at Aurora, noted the system’s efficiency and user-friendly deployment. Aurora plans to begin customer deliveries by early 2025.
