Swiss start-up Destinus is leading the charge in developing hydrogen-powered hypersonic jets that could revolutionize global travel. With the potential to cut flight times from Frankfurt to Sydney to just 4 hours and 15 minutes, compared to the current 20 hours, Destinus’ innovative technology is reshaping the future of aviation.

Destinus has been testing its second prototype, the Eiger, which successfully completed test flights in late 2022. The company is also partnering with Spain’s Ministry of Science through its Plan de Tecnologías Aeronáuticas (PTA), with an investment of €12 million to develop hydrogen-powered supersonic flights. This project includes collaborations with technology centers, Spanish universities, and engine manufacturer ITP Aero, with plans to build a test facility near Madrid to further develop air-breathing hydrogen engines.

“We are delighted to have been awarded these grants, especially because they are a clear sign that Destinus is aligned with the strategic lines of Spain and Europe to advance hydrogen flight,” said Davide Bonetti, VP of Business Development and Products at Destinus.

Destinus' technology promises flight speeds of five times the speed of sound, making flights from Frankfurt to Shanghai possible in just 2 hours and 45 minutes. The company’s vision is to make long-haul, zero-emission travel a reality using hydrogen, significantly reducing both travel time and environmental impact.
