Pratt & Whitney, a division of RTX, has announced a project under the European Union’s Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking to advance hydrogen-fueled turboprop technology. The project aims to develop and demonstrate hydrogen propulsion for regional aviation, which could significantly reduce emissions and support the EU’s ambitious climate goals.
As part of this initiative, Pratt & Whitney will adapt its existing turboprop engine architecture to operate on liquid hydrogen fuel. This demonstration marks a critical step toward certifying hydrogen propulsion systems for use in regional aircraft, potentially accelerating the shift to sustainable aviation technologies. Collaborating with a consortium of aerospace partners across Europe, Pratt & Whitney plans to complete the first flight tests by 2027.
