Overleaf Project Drives Breakthroughs in Hydrogen Storage for Hydrogen Aviation

The Overleaf project, spearheaded by Aciturri and funded by the EU, is pushing the boundaries of hydrogen storage technology to enable zero-emission aviation. With aviation responsible for 3.8% of global CO₂ emissions and expected to triple its carbon footprint in the next 25 years, innovative solutions like Overleaf are key to achieving the European Green Deal’s goal of cutting transport emissions by 90% by 2050. The project is addressing one of hydrogen aviation’s biggest hurdles: safe, efficient, and scalable hydrogen storage.

Advanced Tank Design and Safety Innovations

Overleaf is developing cryogenic hydrogen storage tanks capable of withstanding temperatures of -253°C while maximizing storage capacity and minimizing weight. Using cutting-edge manufacturing techniques like additive manufacturing and automated fiber placement, the project leverages lightweight, high-strength materials for durability and efficiency. Collaborations with TU Delft University and Universitat de Girona have led to optimized designs that safely store larger hydrogen volumes while maintaining efficiency—essential for sustainable aviation.

Safety is a top priority, with Overleaf incorporating real-time leak detection sensors, developed by TU Delft, and employing advanced inspection methods like micro-computerized X-ray tomography to detect potential cracks or leaks. These breakthroughs ensure hydrogen storage meets the highest safety standards required for aviation.

A Path to Zero-Emission Hydrogen Aviation

Beyond its impact on aviation, Overleaf’s hydrogen storage innovations have applications in rail and telecommunications industries, demonstrating the project’s broader potential. As Europe takes the lead in sustainable aviation, initiatives like the Overleaf project, supported by the EU’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, are pivotal in making hydrogen-powered flight a reality.

Experts, such as Krisztina Hencz from Transport & Environment, emphasize the importance of clear policies, financial support, and collaboration to accelerate hydrogen aviation’s progress. With projects like Overleaf advancing key technologies, Europe is poised to meet its environmental targets and remain a global leader in green aviation innovation.
