An Irish offshore wind developer has announced plans to build a 600MW hydrogen-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Eastern Canada, marking a significant step forward in the global push for greener aviation fuels. This ambitious project aims to utilize renewable offshore wind power to produce green hydrogen, which will then be converted into SAF for the aviation industry.
The facility, which will be located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, is designed to help decarbonize the aviation industry by providing a sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel. The hydrogen will be produced using offshore wind energy, which will power the electrolysis process to generate green hydrogen with zero carbon emissions. This hydrogen will then be converted into SAF, reducing the aviation sector's reliance on fossil fuels.
The project is a key part of the developer's strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio while contributing to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry.
