H2FLY, a German hydrogen-electric propulsion pioneer and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Joby Aviation, has achieved a significant milestone with the first successful piloted flight of its liquid hydrogen-powered aircraft, the HY4. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of sustainable aviation technology, showcasing the viability of liquid hydrogen as a clean and efficient fuel source for future air travel.

Josef Kallo, the founder of H2FLY, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “This achievement marks a watershed moment in the use of hydrogen to power aircraft.” The HY4 aircraft, equipped with a hydrogen-electric fuel cell propulsion system, demonstrated the feasibility of using cryogenically-stored liquid hydrogen, which offers a greater range due to its lower weight and volume compared to gaseous hydrogen.

This success is expected to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technology in the aviation industry, supporting the transition towards zero-emission flights. H2FLY’s accomplishment is a key step in their path towards commercialization, as they continue to lead in the development and testing of hydrogen aviation propulsion systems.
