UK-based low-cost airline easyJet has partnered with JetZero, a startup focused on blended-wing airliner designs, to develop hydrogen-fueled aircraft for commercial flights. This collaboration highlights easyJet’s ongoing investment in hydrogen propulsion technology and its commitment to a more sustainable future for aviation.
JetZero, known for its innovative blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft, is exploring how this design can serve as an ideal platform for hydrogen-powered engines. As part of this partnership, easyJet will contribute its expertise in hydrogen propulsion systems, gained through years of work with various industry partners. EasyJet will also join JetZero’s newly established Airline Working Group, which focuses on the practical aspects of airline and airport operations, ensuring that the new aircraft design improves all aspects of flight.
David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer of easyJet, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "The blended-wing aircraft design offers the potential to maximize efficiencies and significantly reduce fuel burn and emissions in the process. Its potential to be powered by SAF or hydrogen in the future is also incredibly exciting, and we look forward to working with JetZero over the coming years to achieve our joint ambition of delivering a more sustainable pathway for the aviation industry."
This collaboration between easyJet and JetZero marks a significant step toward the development of hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft, reinforcing the potential of BWB designs to revolutionize aviation with zero-emission solutions.
