Seattle, WA – On July 7, 2025, energy leaders from around the country announced the launch of the Hydrogen Mobility Initiative (H2MI): a new working group aimed at developing a first-of-its-kind hydrogen mobility network in the Pacific Northwest. H2MI plans to set a national example for the synchronized deployment of hydrogen transportation and fueling infrastructure. The emergent network has the potential to connect to additional fueling systems spanning across California, British Columbia and Texas, thereby creating the world’s most extensive hydrogen corridor running on domestically produced hydrogen.

The Hydrogen Mobility Initiative Steering Committee, which held its inaugural meeting on May 27, 2025, comprises 11 industry-leading stakeholders including Center for Houston’s Future, Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE), GTI Energy, Northwest Seaport Alliance and Washington Trucking Association. The Steering Committee will work in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) and the Consortium for Hydrogen and Renewably Generated E-Fuels (CHARGE), which serves as H2MI Secretariat, to administer the working group and serve as its Founding Members.

H2MI elevates the U.S. Department of Energy’s vision for a national hydrogen ecosystem, supporting a connected network of hydrogen producers, consumers, and infrastructure through the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program. Through cross-regional collaboration, the H2MI network will help advance key policy goals, including: deploying domestic hydrogen sources, promoting energy independence in the transportation sector, and bolstering hydrogen’s role in generating clean air.

To make its vision a reality, H2MI will leverage industry cluster dynamics to facilitate collaboration between companies across the hydrogen value chain, improving investment cases for stakeholders across the ecosystem. The initiative will identify demand-side opportunities in the hydrogen transportation and storage landscape; develop strategies for creating a regional hydrogen refueling network that meets demand; and catalyze the synchronized deployment of hydrogen fueling infrastructure – including the required hydrogen production, transportation, hydrogen stations, and storage.

H2MI is attracting leaders from across the hydrogen value chain, including energy companies, hydrogen producers, distributors, storage firms, hydrogen truck manufacturers, fuel cell technology providers, refueling infrastructure providers, and fleet operators. By leveraging hydrogen as a transportation fuel, H2MI will accelerate regional deployment, drive economic growth, and create quality jobs across the Pacific Northwest.

“The Pacific Northwest is uniquely positioned to lead the country in hydrogen deployment,” said Aaron Feaver, Executive Director of CHARGE. “Launching H2MI is a major milestone for our region, and CHARGE is honored to help lead the effort. Together, we’re building regional momentum, unlocking new opportunities for decarbonized transport and laying the groundwork for a robust hydrogen economy that benefits communities, industries and the climate.”

“Achieving market liftoff for the hydrogen industry requires large-scale collaboration between producers and industry partners,” said Chris Green, President of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association. “We are proud to join H2MI as a founding member, connecting the projects of our Hub with key stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain that will support our efforts to unlock new economic potential and increased energy production in the region.”

"The Center for Houston’s Future is leading efforts to catalyze a robust Gulf Coast clean hydrogen ecosystem,” said Managing Director Brett Perlman. “As part of our work, we are focused on building partnerships across the state, nation and world. Cross-state collaboration is key to scaling clean hydrogen production, deployment and use. We are happy to represent Houston and Texas in this exciting Pacific Northwest initiative.”

"CTE is looking forward to participating as a member of the H2MI Committee to advance the goals of promoting and deploying viable and sustainable hydrogen solutions that will reduce the emission impacts of transportation on communities in the Pacific Northwest," said the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE).

“HTEC is committed to accelerating the hydrogen economy by building a robust and integrated hydrogen transportation ecosystem in British Columbia and beyond,” said Jeff Grant, VP, Transportation Solutions at HTEC. “We’re proud to support H2MI as a strategic step toward aligning infrastructure development, connecting regional networks, and enabling the synchronized deployment of hydrogen solutions. H2MI represents a critical opportunity to lower costs, improve operational efficiency, and standardize practices across the hydrogen value chain—laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more connected transportation future.”

“Pacific Clean Fuels and the Papé Group are focused on leading the expansion of heavyduty vehicle hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the Western United States,” said Papé’s Director of Alternative Energy and Infrastructure, Gabriel Olson. “But the message is clear now more than ever: Industry needs to focus on cost effective and strategic solutions for hydrogen infrastructure development. During this time of change, H2MI is a critical part of aligning the timing of project development, demand side growth, and policy support. We are thrilled to support our industry partners in this space.”

“We need all options on the table to make the change to a clean energy future. We support H2MI because it represents a proactive approach to creating the infrastructure to support zero-emission trucking,” said Sheri Call, Executive Vice President of Washington Trucking Associations. “While the finished product will be years in the making, planning today will create options and needed certainty around adoption by industry. WTA is excited to be a part of this planning and what it means for the future of clean trucking.”
