The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $46 million in funding to accelerate the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies as part of its Hydrogen Energy Earthshot initiative. This funding will support projects aimed at reducing costs, improving efficiency, and expanding the use of hydrogen in various sectors, from transportation to industrial applications.
Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Secretary of Energy, highlighted the importance of the investment, saying, “Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies offer a transformative pathway to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change while driving clean energy jobs."
The funding will focus on projects addressing critical barriers to hydrogen adoption, including reducing the cost of hydrogen production, developing storage solutions, and advancing fuel cell performance. It will also support initiatives that explore hydrogen's potential in hard-to-decarbonize industries like steel production and long-haul trucking.
Granholm emphasized the role of this investment in achieving the DOE’s goal of producing clean hydrogen at $1 per kilogram within a decade—a significant milestone toward making hydrogen a mainstream energy source.
