Washington, D.C. – In a groundbreaking move for the future of sustainable aviation, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, along with bi-partisan support from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04), has announced the successful passage of the Hydrogen Aviation Strategy Act by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, marking a critical step in the bill's trajectory as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization for this year.
FAA Transformation Ahead
The Hydrogen Aviation Strategy Act, a bipartisan effort, is set to catalyze both public and private sector collaborations focusing on the exploration and expansion of hydrogen energy technologies within the aviation industry. The bill not only underscores robust research but also encourages innovation, emphasizing hydrogen as a potential game-changing fuel.
Impact on Aviation Policies
Senator Ossoff asserted, "The commitment to hydrogen energy represents a potent opportunity to generate jobs in Georgia, fortify American energy independence, and significantly reduce our collective carbon footprint across several industries, notably including aviation." He further emphasized that the bill is a testament to his ongoing bipartisan efforts to pioneer research and invest in hydrogen energy in the Southeast.
Hydrogen-Powered Flight
As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Aviation subcommittee, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) stated, "Embracing hydrogen energy in aviation aligns with our aspirations for a net-zero emission future by 2050. This effort will not only create high-quality jobs but also propel us towards a more sustainable and energy-secure path."
FAA & Industry Synergy
Highlights of the Act include directives for the FAA to set new objectives regarding the adoption of hydrogen in aviation, consultations with NASA, industry experts, airlines, and hydrogen producers, and the formation of an advisory committee dedicated to framing guidelines for the utilization of hydrogen as an aviation power source. Moreover, it defines the trajectory for the certification of hydrogen-powered aircraft.
