Why We Exist
Air travel has long been a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions. In 2021 alone, aviation accounted for over 10% of transportation emissions, a figure that has grown faster than road, rail, or shipping emissions. Direct CO2 emissions from aviation, which plummeted from over 1,000 Mt in 2019 to 600 Mt in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, rebounded to around 720 Mt in 2021, regaining nearly one-third of the drop from 2019 levels. If left unchecked, these emissions are expected to continue to grow rapidly, surpassing their 2019 level in the coming few years.
Despite new aircraft being up to 20% more efficient than their predecessors, this has been insufficient to counteract the growing demand for air travel. With passenger demand growing at over 5% per year from 2000 to 2019, the annual improvements in aircraft efficiency are far below what is needed to align with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario.
At HYSKY Society, we believe that the solution lies in hydrogen aviation. Our goal is to pioneer and promote the technologies, operations, and market conditions necessary to reduce emissions below 900 Mt CO2 by 2030, in line with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario.
